Arts & Crafts Ranch Addition/Alteration, Weston, CT by DeMotte Architects

Project location: Weston, CT
Project type: Addition/Alteration
Completion date: 2004
Architect: Brad DeMotte, R.A.

This project is an “extreme makeover”….an extensive addition and alteration that drastically changed the appearance of the house. The existing house was a single story ranch with a walk-out basement, finished with stucco walls and red asphalt shingles in a quasi-Mediterranean style design.

The design objective was to create a single story addition in scale with the existing house, which consisted of a larger kitchen, a family room and a master bedroom suite on the first floor, with a screened porch below. Much of the interior was remodeled, while all the the existing materials were removed. New exterior materials consisted of cedar shingles and cedar clapboard siding, with only a clear sealer as a finish. All exterior trim and the clad windows were finished in dark green, resulting in a very natural appearance. Cedar decking and railings were selected by the architect, also finished only with a clear sealer to let their natural beauty shine through.

The low-pitched roofs, deep overhangs, bungalow columns and the choice of materials & colors create the look of a craftsman style home of the past, yet with all the modern amenities of today.
