Brad DeMotte helped us make the right decision when we were planning an addition to our house. We almost listened to a contractor who suggested we not bear the expense of an architect when they’ve done many additions without one (which is only possible in Ct. due to a loophole). We are building a new colonial in Scarsdale that will sit on a half acre site and will be approximately 6000 square feet above ground. I can honestly say that Brad has been one of the easiest and most effective professionals that I have worked with in both my personal and professional lives. This is what I like about Brad:

He listens to what we want, but at the same time, he brings his extensive experience and knowledge to the table and constantly makes good recommendations.

He has a good design sense. Not over the top. It just feels right and is sensible.

He is incredibly efficient and responsive. It seems that the moment I press send on an email, his reply is already in my in box.

He is budget conscience meaning that he understands his role, our goals and what we want to spend on his services. I never feel like he is up selling us or overcharging for his time. Bottom line. I don’t mind the meter running with Brad. He has integrity and is aware of our budget.

He has a broad knowledge of building techniques, styles and standards. He is a great advocate with a builder in representing our needs. He played an important role in negotiating our contract with our builder. Something I was fairly new at and was put at ease knowing Brad was in our corner.

When we disagree, it is comfortable. I don’t feel like he is patronizing us due to our lack of experience and by the same token, while he has strong preferences, he realizes we are going to live in this house and not him.

Bottom line is this. While I am not an overly experience consumer of architectural services, I am glad I am working with Brad on our first big projects and I would not hesitate to do so again in the future. If you are considering a project, you should most definitely consider Brad.

We hired Demotte architects in April of 2013 to design a significant indoor/outdoor extension to our 1980 Yates Colonial. From our very first meeting, Brad was punctual, attentive, approachable and receptive to our initial plans and thoughts. In our first meeting as we started to discuss the current layout of the house and our ideas around a new master suite, porch and deck, Brad was already pulling out tracing paper to indicate some options on our original blueprints. Brad DeMotte’s firm has done two projects for us. The first was 15 years ago in our Darien 1955 Classic Center Hall Colonial. The job consisted of several additions, a kitchen enlargement and remodel, a family room and master bedroom suite addition, as well as adjustments to the exterior to improve the aesthetics. He also drew the plans for a new blue stone patio. Brad was very easy to work with, talented and very meticulous. I am an artist and designer and therefore was very particular and knew what I wanted. The house was transformed into a 5 bedroom home that had a beautiful flow and looked consistent. He made several visits to check that the construction was proceeding as drawn. We were obviously happy with his work as we hired him again after moving to do a small update and remodel on our new beach cottage home. We remodeled several spaces to become a mudroom/laundry room and added a powder room, as well as partially removing a wall between the dining room and kitchen.

We even asked for several initial rough estimates, and when these were well over our budget, we had an anchor point to re-work from with Brad. When we finally went out to bid with our re-re-revised plans, this ensured we were in the right cost ballpark to start a contract.
Brad will likely be involved during construction on an hourly basis to do a few periodic checkpoints and help us stay on track. All in all, Brad met all of our needs and we would hire him again without hesitation.

I often say meetings with Brad are fun and exciting because he is so creative, understanding and wants you to be happy and love your design. He also handled and guided us through every step of the process, from the very beginning of getting a survey to requesting the building permits and weeding through picking a contractor. Even the contractors were extremely impressed with the amount of detail Brad puts into his construction drawings, which allows for very little confusion and or budget overages. It is with pleasure that we write this letter concerning our extensive experience working with Brad DeMotte.

As general background, we purchased a relatively small two bedroom “summer house” on 4 acres in upper Westchester County, NY. Brad patiently helped us to completely reconfigure the house with a more contemporary, energy efficient design which nearly doubled the square footage.
He was extremely helpful during the design phase by carefully listening to our design ideas and by providing numerous relevant design books with similar layouts so we could refine our “vision”. He then laid out sketch options and was responsive with back and forth revisions until we achieved the final design – in a surprisingly short amount of time. In addition, he filed for and was granted a variance by our Town Zoning Board so our house could be built as we envisioned it and as Brad designed it.

Brad was also closely involved in the pricing and bidding process. We used his bid form so we could easily compare the various proposals. His technical expertise was helpful as we sorted through the various bids. Also, his highly detailed final plans provided clear guidelines for all phases of the project – one builder commented that he had never seen so much detail in a set of drawings.

The project ran into severe difficulty when the selected builder had some business and personal disruptions which caused an inability to complete the job in a timely and workman-like manner. Brad helped us to uncover and document any and all structural issues by performing numerous site visits and phone consultations. He helped us determine a clean break point to terminate the original builder and was readily available to assist in the transition to the new builder.

Brad DeMotte is always available to answer questions and to provide technical assistance and guidance. He is clearly a highly qualified architect who has truly been a pleasure to work with.

Once we contracted with Brad, his team was in our house within a few days and mapping out every inch of our home to develop current drawings.  Soon after, Brad had developed designs for two phases of work envisioned.  We liked the concepts and made a few recommendations which resulted in a few tweaks to the plans.  Once we had agreed on the final plans, Brad developed detailed construction drawings and submitted them to our town for approvals.  It was relatively painless for us to go through this process.

At one point after the construction had begun, our contractor came up with some ideas that we liked and we contacted Brad for his view of the engineering considerations.  Brad was responsive, giving our contractor guidance on how to implement the changes correctly.

Brad is a professional.  He is creative, responsive and worked with us to realize our objectives, sometimes in ways we had not previously considered, but ultimately realizing a vision for our home that we really liked.  We consider the outcome of our project to have been successful and therefore recommend Brad to others looking for architectural services.

We were downsizing to a 1966 cape. Because of the location there were zoning restrictions that needed to be addressed. After trying unsuccessfully to work with our neighbor to workout a variance that would satisfy zoning, Brad helped us develop a plan that met the set back requirements. This design required quite a bit more creative work to have the angles, roof lines and structural intersections work in a harmonious way.

My wife and I have done several renovations and new construction and it was a joy to work with Brad because he listened, did not impose his vision but brought thoughtful alternatives that enhance what we envisioned. Renovations never go as smoothly as expected and Brad was always readily available to discuss issues that arouse. He would draw and draft changes in a day or two, instead of the 3 to 4 weeks we had experienced on other projects.

Brad worked very well with our builder and craftsmen. Actually, he was recommended to our builder by one of his craftsmen, who had worked with Brad on other homes. We would be very happy to hire Brad again, but we are hoping that this is our last project – but who knows. We always felt that we received Brad’s full attention whenever we had any questions. He has become a friend through this process.

We were finishing a basement & in search of an architect. Brad impressed me upon our first meeting as he struck me as very competent and didn’t try & sell me something. Instead, he wanted me to understand my goals, budget and timing and worked up a plan to meet those needs. He was very organized, always easily available by phone or email & always returned calls promptly.

He also helped to save us money in terms of a recommendation he made on an unrelated energy audit/remediation work I was doing with another company.
